Can
the L45S be Folded Completely When Using Custom Lenses?
Below you will find some images that show detail of this simple and convenient
method of allowing the merger of the best of both worlds; the most responsive
LF camera yet and the highest definition lenses available as of today.
The answer is yes, and we are happy to report that this has been done successfully
and without incident for over 3 years now, the removal and installation
of the lens element takes no longer than flipping a film holder, the L45S option
1 and 1 1/2 do not require this and fold complete with the entire lens, but
when seeking a much higher definition the L45S models with Schneider lenses
are to be considered as "professional" equipment.
Note that any Pro 35mm, medium format camera, has the option of removing the
lens, and on the other hand the method of hanging the entire ensemble
from ones neck and allowing it to bounce around as a pendulum is neither good
for your back or the camera.
I still own a Pentax 35mm from the 1960s and several Nikon lenses from
that era and I must say that screwing in the lens is not inconvenient
at all and It allows me to blow the dust off on a regular basis and keep the
shutter and lens elements free from debris which is inevitable when shooting
on location.
The L45s doesn't look new because it utilizes parts of older cameras which
were found as a partial and viable avenue to create the 4x5 coupled parallax
rangefinder camera, if the camera doesn't look new, the entire upper hierarchy
of the photographic profession has decreed that the final product" is Novel"
as a synergistic approach intended and admitted convenient at the moment when
the picture is taken, it is also the lightest Lfer, the easiest to use, and
the smallest, and the method of removing the lens on custom models is novel
to large format but absolutely harmless to the equipment and merited just as
much as in other formats because the shutter blades are no less fragile than
a camera curtain and that hasn't stopped anyone from removing lenses on other
equipment for the last 70 years.
Those who own the L45s with custom lenses have reported that the installation
and removal of the lens is not inconvenient, safe, and well worth the extra
effort for those who seek the extra definition that these fabulous lenses can
provide.
